v1.8: Youtube, Soundcloud
The STREAMLING Overlay app uses a mix of methods to find the track id. A couple of music players have specially built APIs (iTunes and the legacy windows media player), some media players change their app title to include the track name (such as Spotify and VLC), others can be found through the Windows "Automation" API which is meant for screen readers (and suddenly stops working when the app is minimized), and for one DJ music app I found no other way than to build a dummy "Icecast" server so that the app can connect and pretend to broadcast music to it, complete with track IDs.
The new method I added this release is Windows media transport. So if a music player comes up in that box in the corner when you adjust your volume, then STREAMLING Overlay will pick it up. I also added a bunch of new music apps through old fashioned methods because they don't support media controls.
There's a lot more music player apps now supported by STREAMLING Overlay app, including web sites like Youtube and Soundcloud. And some existing apps work better now.
added support for current artist + track name from:
- Apple Music
- AIMP
- Audacious
- Dopamine 3
- MediaMonkey
- Jellyfin Media Player
- Resonic Player
- Strawberry Music Player
- Amazon Music
- XMPlay
- PotPlayer
Improved support and reliability for:
- YouTube Music Desktop App
- Pretzel Rocks app (no setup needed now)
- Windows Media Player Legacy (WMP12)
- Deezer
- Tidal
Music sites tested to work in the browser:
- YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Mixcloud, Monstercat, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, Vimeo, Pocket Casts, Plex, JellyFin and more
Browsers tested:
- Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Zen — must have media controls turned on; or turn them off to not show track names from browser-based media.
I'm no longer going to list obsolete media players like Quicktime Player [???? – 2016] and Groove Music [2015 – 2021] but they're still in the code and should still technically still work in theory.
With the support for "System Media Transport Controls", there's certainly a few music players and music websites which are supported now that I haven't even though to test. Let me know if any you use are suddenly working. Some Microsoft Store apps might need some tweaks to work properly.
